30 Minutes A Week Sparked Journee’s Love of Reading!

September 1st, 2018

Journee reads one of her favorite books with her mentor, Kaliah.

Journee is inquisitive, creative, and full of energy. She loves math. It is her favorite subject in school, and she easily completed her math homework. But when it was time for reading, she would be out of her seat, looking for any opportunity to be helpful…and to avoid doing her reading homework.

Journee started her first grade year reading below grade level. Every week, she practiced reading for 30 minutes with an academic specialist.

“She helped me with reading. We read some books. We played some games on the computer,” says Journee as she points out some of her favorite books on the bookshelf in our kids’ space. I can’t help but smile as she tells me animatedly about the computer game with a word-eating worm she loved to play with her Paul’s Place teacher.

By the end of the year, she was reading for fun with her mentor and asking to take books home to read with her mom and grandparents. She finished the school year full of confidence and with good grades in reading. Now, Journee says “reading is awesome!”

After-3, Paul’s Place’s after-school program for elementary students, gives first to fifth graders access to academic support, enrichment, and mentoring five days per week. The academic support in After-3 is so important because children who are not reading at grade level by the end of third grade are four times more likely to drop out of high school.

There are many more kids like Journee who need us, and this school year, we’re planning to more than double the number of elementary students in our after-school program. But we can only do it with your help. Your gift will spark the love of learning in our students – a significant investment in their futures.
